Complex signalised crossings present difficulties for people with learning difficulties and visual impairments

Issue
Complex signalised crossings, especially the one at the corner of St James’s Parade and Dorchester Street, prevent some people with learning difficulties from moving around Bath independently. Due to its complexity the St James’s Parade / Dorchester Street crossing also presents issues for people with sight loss.

Opportunity
Allowing pedestrians to cross directly from Southgate Street to the bus station in a single phase could simplify use of the crossing. Adding a press button with a rotating cone and pedestrian signal head to the left hand side of the south bound crossing in front of the car park entrance would make the crossing easier to use for some people with sigh loss.

Another opportunity could be to encourage pedestrians wishing to access the bus station to cross Dorchester Street at the next controlled crossing point to the East, at the end of Newark Street. This could be accomplished with additional signage in the Southgate centre and a run of guidance paving, running from the drainage gully in Southgate Street, down New Merchants Passage and Newark Street.
