Therefore proximity of parking is key<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pedestrianised areas with smooth paving are very popular among a range of users. However some\u00a0access issues noted were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need for guidance paving\u00a0in wide open spaces for visually impaired people as the building line may be unusable when an area is crowded<\/li>\n<li>Need to restrain cyclists and skateboarders whose faster movement is alarming and potentially harmful to many older and disabled people.<\/li>\n<li>Strips of cobbles across the surface are uncomfortable for wheelchair users as when crowded these cannot be avoided as they are staggered across the route.<\/li>\n<li>A-boards and the use of bollards for traffic management can be a hazard for pedestrians, especially those with sight loss.<\/li>\n<li>Restriction to car access has adversely affected some disabled people. <em>&#8216;Because of the changes that have been made to the City Centre road system &#8211; such as Dorchester St being closed to cars during the day, needing to use North Parade to access the Mineral Hospital, the bus gate on the High Street &#8211; if you need a car to access Bath as I do it is extremely difficult. To the point that I only come to Bath when essential and with assistance.&#8217;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[lead_text]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/lead_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider providing\u00a0guidance paving\u00a0in open pedestrianised\u00a0spaces to help people with sight loss to negotiate them.<\/li>\n<li>Education, signage and enforcement\u00a0to restrain fast moving cyclists and skateboarders .<\/li>\n<li>Create accessible paths on desire line that do not have strips of cobbles across the surface.<\/li>\n<li>Rigorously enforce against use of A-boards<\/li>\n<li>Restrict use of bollards for traffic management, using enforcement and restriction of motor traffic as alternatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[lead_text] Issues [\/lead_text] Motor traffic volumes and speeds are often taken for granted and disabled people work around this issue by restricting themselves to\u00a0safe zones, or driving themselves to avoid traffic danger.
