So access\u00a0off and on to the footway\u00a0at frequent intervals is a necessity.<\/li>\n<li>High kerbs to footways and lack of dropped kerbs cited as a major problem by most respondents. High kerbs can be trip hazards for those <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/128592048\" target=\"_blank\">pushed to the edge of the footway<\/a>.\u00a0Safe zones are considered to be raised footways with kerbs and people\u00a0want to be able to get back quickly on to this area. \u00a0Dropped kerbs are required at frequent intervals along footways.\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>Dropped kerbs or absence of are a problem throughout Bath.\u00a0Quite often you get one at one side of the road and then there isn&#8217;t a corresponding one on the opposite side.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Often dropped kerbs\u00a0are not highlighted. This affects people moving along the footway who cannot distinguish the dropped kerb and also car drivers who <a href=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/index.php\/portfolio\/parked-cars-can-block-dropped-kerbs\/\" target=\"_blank\">park alongside and block it<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Dropped kerbs can sited in the wrong place to give a clear view to the other side of the street or of approaching traffic.<\/li>\n<li>Obstructions on footways such as <a href=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/index.php\/portfolio\/a-boards-present-issues-for-many-disabled-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">A-boards are a particular problem<\/a> in tourist areas. \u00a0Other footway obstructions include cafe seating, sign posts.\n<ul>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>A-Boards were a significant issues but since new local legislation came in the situation has improved<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>Often cars parked on pavements not allowing room to get through and also parked on dropped kerbs<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p><em>Obstacles on pavements are\u00a0hard to negotiate as I cannot move things out of the way myself<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Perpendicular car parking with overhanging bumpers on the footway are a particular problem creating a low level hazard for visually impaired people using the kerb line as guidance and restrict footway width.<\/li>\n<li>Bollards used for traffic management are a trip hazard and restrict footway width.<\/li>\n<li>Footway cambers\u00a0that are steep are difficult for mobility and visually impaired people and a hazard for wheelchair users and those attempting to push them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[lead_text]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/lead_text]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Westgate Street narrow footway widths and crowding on footways force more vulnerable users onto the carriageway where they are exposed to motor traffic danger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-257\" src=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Bath 041\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041-400x300.jpg 400w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Bath-041-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Westgate Street most commonly cited as footway with insufficient dropped kerbs. Access to popular Boots and Superdrug shops is restricted because of this. &#8216;<em>Not able to get into Superdrug shop because of lack of dropped kerbs. As the footway is the only smooth section of the road with the carriageway cobbled, this makes it even more difficult to negotiate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-201\" src=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/181-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"181\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/181-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/181-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/181-720x960.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bartlett Street provides a route to Milsom St and to the popular pedestrianised Southgate centre and the Mineral Hospital. However, it is a narrow vehicular street with narrow footways each side. Bollards on the footway further restrict footway width. Cobbles on the carriageway make using this surface particularly difficult. The junction with George St does not provide adequate dropped kerbs with tactile warning paving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Bartlett-Street.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-307\" src=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Bartlett-Street-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"Bartlett Street\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Bartlett-Street-300x245.jpg 300w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Bartlett-Street-720x589.jpg 720w, http:\/\/rossatkin.com\/bathaudit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Bartlett-Street.jpg 933w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Queens Square: footway surrounding the Square is very narrow permitting only single file walking and is further hemmed in by a row of parked cars. Allocation of footway width appears to be determined by need for car parking rather than for pedestrian comfort.
